How often should you wash your dog?
Most of us reach for the dog shampoo when we notice our furry friend getting a little bit pongy, or after a play at the beach. But how often should we really be washing our pets?
The short answer is less often than you think!
Samantha Crothers, a Melbourne-based vet at a specialist centre, told the ABC that healthy dogs don’t need a wash unless they smell or get dirty. She advises that if you don’t want to bathe your dog, you don’t have to – highlighting that feral dogs or our pets’ distant wild ancestors do not wash at all.
Why less can be more
Sometimes, washing your dog too frequently can strip the natural oils from their coat and cause skin issues like itching and dryness. Harsh shampoos can also exacerbate the problem. When used too often, even medicated products can do more harm than good.
Choosing the best products
To avoid irritated skin, choose natural, gentle, dog-specific shampoos and steer clear of human products. For a dog with healthy skin, look for products that don’t contain coal tar, selenium or benzoyl peroxide, unless recommended by your vet.
For dogs with sensitive skin, look for products that have soap-free formulas, oatmeal and no added fragrances.
Alternatives to the bath
There are other ways of keeping your dog fresh and clean without filling up the tub. Try brushing them down to remove loose hair and dirt. A damp cloth or pet-friendly wipes can be used to freshen up faces, paws, and other messy spots. Rinsing paws after walks, especially after muddy adventures, is another practical trick to keep dirt under control (and your homes free from muddy paw prints!).
Regular grooming also helps you monitor your dog’s skin, coat and overall health. While baths aren’t always necessary, brushing and checking for lumps, ticks and irritations should be part of your dog grooming routine.
For most healthy dogs, a bath every few months is sufficient unless they get particularly dirty or smelly. Your dog’s coat has evolved to stay healthy and protective, and letting it do its job can save you a lot of time – and keep your pet comfortable and happy.
